About Narendra (Nick) Patel, MD

Narendra (Nick) Patel, MD, MPH has a unique and diverse background as a retina specialist and health care professional.  Dr. Patel completed his medical school at the University of Illionois College of Medicine and went on to complete his residency at Northwestern University College of Medicine.  He then worked with AID Village Clinics (Mbrikani, Kenya) upgrading their clinical outreach program and supported training of ophthalmologists at Kikuyu Eye Hospital in Nairobi.  Upon his return to the US, he completed retina fellowship training at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

As an ophthalmologist, retina specialist and expert in health systems management, Dr. Patel was recruited to take on the newly established Bruce G. Pratt Endowed Chair for International Ophthalmology at the Medical University of South Carolina upon completing his fellowship training.  He fostered training initiatives in Costa Rica towards the development of a pediatric ophthalmology fellowship training program as well as serving as the lead advisor to the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness Training Consortium.  In addition to teaching ophthalmology residents at MUSC, Dr. Patel lectured and taught ophthalmology residents in the South America, Central America, Africa, and China.

Before moving to Greensboro, Dr. Patel with his wife, Martha Grace Patel, volunteered to support ophthalmologists with their subspecialty expertise in retina and pediatric ophthalmology at Tenwek Hospital in Kenya, Good Sherpherd Hospital in Swaziland, Fundacion Vision in Paraguay, and Hospital Metropolitano in Ecuador.  Dr. Martha Grace Patel is a pediatric ophthalmologist with Carolina Children’s Eye Care in Greensboro.

Dr. Patel enjoys taking care of patients with a broad range of retinal conditions, including hereditary retinal disease, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, macular pucker (distortion of the retina), macular holes, retinal detachments, and inflammatory retinal/choroidal disease.  He and his wife are thankful to support the Greensboro community as specialists in eye care.

Dr. Patel has a broad base of experience in health systems evaluation and management in the United States and abroad.  He has worked in Egypt, Kenya, Rwanda, and Ecuador through organizations like USAID, World Vision, World Relief, the World Bank, and AID Village Clinics.  He began his tenure in this field while working with Accreditations Operations at the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.  While there, he hosted a delegation from Servicemaster of Japan and the president of the Indian Hospital Association.

As an educator and lecturer, he prepared and presented foundational materials for indicator development and measurement within the Joint Commission and as a consultant to its constituent hospitals. He completed his Master of Public Health training at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health in Health Systems Management and International Health. While in Baltimore, he served as a consultant to the newly opened Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center.

His hobbies include woodworking, furniture design, hiking, guitar, and reading.​
